Patient Registry Program

The Patient Registry Program helps connect Islanders to a family doctor or nurse practitioner who is accepting new patients, whether you have just moved to Prince Edward Island or have relocated within the province.

You should contact the Patient Registry if you:

  • do not have a family doctor or nurse practitioner and would like to register for one;
  • have moved within the province and are looking for a family doctor or nurse practitioner in your new area;
  • are expecting a baby and do not have a family physician or nurse practitioner;
  • are currently on the Patient Registry and your contact information has changed; or
  • are on the Patient Registry and have found your own doctor.

How do I register?
Call 1-855-563-2101 (toll-free), or complete the Patient Registry Application Form online to register yourself or a family member quickly and easily.

When will I be placed with a family doctor or nurse practitioner?
The length of time you wait on the registry will vary by region and is based on available spaces in physician and nurse practitioner practices.

Patients are assigned in chronological order, so those on the registry the longest are assigned first. You will be contacted by the Patient Registry when a family doctor or nurse practitioner is accepting new patients in your area.

What if I need to see a doctor now?
You can visit a walk-in clinic for non-urgent care. If you need emergency care call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Where can I find a walk-in clinic?

Walk-in clinics may be offered by Health PEI or a private operator and serve patients on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Call ahead before visiting a walk-in clinic as hours (listed below) may change without notice. Clinics may also close early when the maximum patient capacity has been reached, or if there are no patients waiting to be seen.

If you are unsure what to do, call 8-1-1, a registered nurse can help you determine if your health issue requires emergency or non-urgent medical care. They can also provide you with reliable information related to your health issue or offer guidance about health services available in the province.

What if I need prenatal care?
If you are expecting a baby and do not have a family physician or nurse practitioner, the Patient Registry will assign you to a family physician or nurse practitioner for your prenatal care only.

Are there health care services I can access now while waiting?
While you are waiting to be assigned a family doctor or nurse practitioner, you  can access many primary care and health screening services that support your health and well-being, including:

  • Colorectal Cancer Screening Program
  • Cervical Cancer Screening and Prevention Program
  • Breast Cancer Screening Program
  • Diabetes Program
  • Registered Dietician Service – for contact information, visit healthpei.ca/healthcentres
    To help manage conditions, including: high cholesterol/high blood pressure, weight management, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, crohns/colitis, food allergies/lactose intolerance, celiac disease, osteoporosis, healthy meal planning.
  • Primary Care Registerd Nurse Service – for contact information, visit healthpei.ca/healthcentres
    To provide support if you want to quit smoking, or would like one-on-one group setting education on how to live well and manage chronic diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
